Root Canals
Root canals are not as painful as most Springfield, MO patients assume. Choose McKowen Family Dental for your root canal and you will find the procedure is surprisingly comfortable. The procedure begins with an examination and analysis performed with the use of a radiograph obtained with x-rays. The dentist applies a local anesthetic to numb the tooth, inserts a dental dam to protect surrounding teeth. An opening is created within the tooth so the pulp chamber and root canal can be cleaned. This area is shaped to accommodate the filling. Once the space is shaped and cleaned, the endodontist fills the root canal with biocompatible material, typically in the form of gutta-percha. This material, similar to rubber, is positioned in place with an adhesive cement, guaranteeing the root canal is completely sealed. A temporary filling is then put in position to cover the opening. The dentist removes the temporary filling prior to the tooth’s restoration.
The dentist adds the crown or another dental restoration on the tooth for restoration and protection, setting the stage for full tooth functionality moving forward. However, it must be noted some patients require the use of a post within the tooth. If there is insufficient structure to secure the restoration, the post provides additional support so you can bite into your favorite foods without the slightest worry.
